General

The Skye Guide is written and maintained by John Allan. It is designed primarily to be of value to visitors to Skye. As such, the concentration of information is around those things that visitors are most likely to value, though many sections will be helpful to people who live on Skye, or who are planning to do so.

I am one of Skye's incomers. I have known the island for over thirty years but have lived here permanently only since 2005. The guide mostly covers those things of which I have personal experience.  It is always work in progress and will be added to, subtracted from and changed from time to time. Check back!

Opinions

I have tried to keep a clear distinction between fact and opinion throughout the guide. I hope it is clear where one ends and the other begins. The opinions expressed are mine and I hope they have value for you - but please don't treat them as facts. Your opinion may differ.

And do let me know what your opinions are. Perhaps places I've missed that you think are worth including in the guide. Perhaps you disagree with me. Fire away .

Software

The Skye Guide is developed using Joomla!  -  which is free, open source software released under the GNU/GPL Licence.

Joomla

I have developed The Skye Guide using the Mozilla Firefox browser. It all works pretty well in other browsers, with the notable exception of Internet Explorer, which really does not behave as it should.

If you still put up with seeing the web through the blinkered eyes of Microsoft's Internet Explorer, you should take the plunge and get a better browser. It's very easy to do. Here are three decent options.

Hosting

I have been very impressed by the service from these guys. Good value for money - amazingly prompt and professional service. Recommended.

Skye Sculpture

The Collie and Mackenzie Sculpture Group is seeking to commemorate the amazing achievements of these Cuillin pioneers by erecting a bronze sculpture of the two men at Sligachan. You can help realise this wonderful project by donating some bronze.
