The Chandlery Restauant, Portree

Chef John Kelly's main restaurant is The Chandlery, at The Bosville Hotel in Portree. It opened in 1998 and was Scotland's 'Restaurant of the Year' in 2004. Here, John offers a limited menu - about four choices of main course - that doesn't change much from month to month. The reward for the diner is that the dishes are rehearsed to something near perfection.

It's a fresh and interestingly different menu, concentrating on food produced on Skye. A liking for seafood will widen your options.

The presentation on the plates is a delight, and the little extras before and betweeen courses are always delicious and worthwhile.

On the downside, the environment is awkward - you have to wander through the bistro to reach the Chandlery - and the service is usually well below the standards set by the kitchen. Still, it's the best food in Portree. Ignore the shortcomings and enjoy the taste!
