Kinloch Lodge

In January 2010, Kinloch Lodge was awarded Skye's first ever Michelin star - a fantastic achievement on this island of wonderful restaurants. The accolade sits with the three AA rosettes that Kinloch and head chef Marcello Tully have already earned.

Kinloch Lodge stands in a wonderful setting on the shore of Loch na Dal. It’s a hotel, a restaurant, a shop, an online shop…… and it’s Lady Claire MacDonald, the food commentator, television presenter, writer and famous cook.

The main part of the building dates from the early 17th century, when it was built as a Clan MacDonald shooting lodge. This is Highland country living at its best. The place is wonderfully welcoming. That applies to the people, the style, the open fires and, of course, the excellent cooking. The restaurant, run under the close attentions of Claire MacDonald herself, is a good one by national, or even international, standards. The menu concentrates on beautifully prepared, and very high quality, local produce.

I think Kinloch Lodge strikes a difficult balance perfectly. It is special, luxurious, famed and not cheap. But it’s never stuffy or overly ‘posh’. You can savour the atmosphere of an elegant family home, be part of it, relax and enjoy the experience.

And if you want to learn how to cook up some of these wonderful treats yourself – you can even book a stay at the Lodge and spend a few days with Claire doing just that!

You can find the hotel at NG705158, at the end of a single track road leading off the A851. There are some really big signs to make it easy.

Try Kinloch Lodge if you possibly can - I think you'll love it!
