The Loch Bay Seafood Restaurant in Stein is the place on Skye to eat fish. Run in a very hands-on way by David and Alison Wilkinson, the Loch Bay serves the best and freshest of local fish. All of it is cooked and served with expert simplicity. There's not a jus or a coulis to be seen.

Fresh oysters and king prawns are the stars of the shellfish show, backed by scallops and mussels, crabs and lobster. The fish menu follows whatever has been landed in Mallaig. Most often you will have a choice of halibut, hake, plaice and dover sole, with regular guest appearances from such as turbot or sea bass.

To go with the fish your choice is salad or veg, with new potatoes or chips. My advice? Chips every time. They know just how to make them here. They're delicious.

The wine list is short, well selected and good value. Puddings are well worth finding some space for. Service is first class.

The Loch Bay is open from Easter till October, and then for a week over the New Year holiday. It's small, with only seven tables and twenty-five covers, so booking is important. 01470 592235.

You will find it on the seafront here, just before the jetty.
