Sing me a song of a dreamy moor,
Where the maids at the shieling spin:
Lull me to sleep by the peat fire smoor,
When the soft night closes in.

New Historic Environment Resource

Highland council has launched a new web resource with a huge amount of information on local historic sites, including some great stuff for Skye.  The map interface is probably the easiest way to access it.

What are these strange numbers scattered around the site?

They are National Grid References. They each identify a bit of land (or sea) 100m square. In The Skye Guide these references are normally linked to an Ordnance Survey map in such a way that the very centre of the map is the point to which the text refers. You can then zoom out to see a wider area. For example, NG640038 is the grid reference for the ferry terminal at Armadale.

More information on how to use the grid is here .
