 Flora's Monument at Kilmuir
In Kilmuir Cemetery, just behind the Museum of Island Life, is this memorial to Flora MacDonald, 'Preserver of Prince Charles Edward Stuart'. Despite the romanticism of the Skye Boat Song et al, she was a real and remarkable person. This is the place to come to and spend a moment reflecting on her amazing courage. She was buried here in 1790.
There are other things of interest in the cemetery. My favourite is the unfinished inscription on the gravestone below. The unfinished inscription
It reads: 'Here lie the remains of Charles MacKarter whose fame as an honest man and remarkable piper will survive this generation for his manners were easy and regular as his music and the melody of his fingers will' The story is that the stonemason who was carving it was to be paid for his work by the deceased's son. When news arrived that the son had been drowned during a crossing of the Minch, the stonemason downed tools... The cemetery is at NG399719, a short walk up the road from the car park at the museum.
