Bealach a' Mhaim is the high point on the well maintained footpath that runs between Sligachan and Glen Brittle. The bealach itself can be reached easily from either end of the path. It is closer to Glen Brittle (NG423258), but the walk up from Sligachan is wonderful. If transport can be organised to allow a walk from one end to the other it's a worthwhile 5 miles. If not, and you are fit enough for it, the 10 mile return trip is a good walk.

The Sligachan start is at NG479297. Park in the layby and follow the wide track towards Alltdearg House. Just before the house a path is signed off to the right. Follow it north of the house through some boggy ground to gain the main path up the left bank of the Allt Dearg Mor. From there just follow your nose. After periods of heavy rain or snow melt, some of the tributaries of the Allt Dearg Mor can be challenging to cross. Even in drier times, be prepared to get your feet wet. The ever changing views of the Cuillin are very good all the way, and there are some fine waterfalls on the burn. An easily missed highlight is a diversion to the top of Am Mam, a simple climb from the cairn at the bealach. The panorama is superb, with otherwise unseen views to the north opening up as you approach the summit.

The bealach is also the starting point for an ascent of the west ridge of Bruach na Frithe, but that is more than a 'moderate' walk.
