Roadworks in Glen Varragill

Phase 3 of the roadworks in Glen Varragill is under way, right in time for the start of the visitor season. There will be disruption until mid-July.
Allow some extra time when driving between Sligachan and Portree.

This is a very pleasant short circular walk - less than a mile and a half long - in the Braes area, south of Portree. Though short, it is nicely varied, with woodland path, moorland track and public road as the walking surfaces. There are good waterfalls, and an excellent viewpoint that's ideal for a quiet moment on a summer evening.

There is some space to park at Braes Hall (NG515365). On the opposite side of the road there is a clearly marked gate. The route is waymarked from here, through the woods of Coille Iosal and up the side of the Ollach River. Soon you reach the first of several waterfalls. The highest of them is pictured below.

Above this waterfall, another gate opens to a track. Follow it north to Farquar's Seat, placed in memory of Farquar MacLeod by his friends in the Ollach community. It is a great vantage point overlooking the Sound of Raasay. Whatever the weather, do sit and look for a bit.

From the seat, follow the track down to the Braes road, turn right and return to the start.
