Lochan near Sgurr na Coinnich summit
Sgurr na Coinnich, at 2,424 ft, is the highest point on Skye outside the Black and the Red Cuillin. The summit has a panoramic view of the water separating Skye from the mainland - from Raasay in the north to the narrows of Loch Alsh and the Skye Bridge directly below and the Sound of Sleat to the south. The Skye Bridge and Kyleakin
Starting from the road to Kylerhea at Bealach Udal (NG753207) cuts the height to be climbed by about 900 ft. The first section from the road is almost tough enough to punish you for the saving though! The going is very heavy through heather and boulders, and it's steep too. The final thousand feet or so is a lot more pleasant, with fine views south-west over Sleat, Loch Aishort and the distant Cuillin. Pick your way up through the crags in a pretty straight line to the lochan at about 2,200 ft (NG759220). The summit with its trig point is a simple walk from there along the ridge of the hill.
