Many of the mountains, lochs and burns and settlements in Skye have Gaelic names. Many others are Norse in origin. I've tried to use the English versions where those are the commonly used ones (Dunvegan rather than Dun Bheagan for example), but I've not attempted to translate the names that are always used in their Gaelic form. So Sgurr Dearg is called Sgurr Dearg - not The Red Peak.

The meanings of the place names can often be very interesting though. The Ordnance Survey provides a useful guide to Gaelic placenames, and another for the Norse ones.
